Founded in 1818 as the "Rhode-Island and Providence Plantations Peace Society," later called the Rhode Island Peace Society. Following the founding of the Massachusetts Peace Society in 1815, and influenced by Noah Worcester's tract The Solemn Review of the Custom of War, Moses Brown and George Benson initiated the movement which led to the founding of the Rhode Island Peace Society.
